The entrepreneurial journey is often challenging, but for Black founders, the road can be even more complex. Limited access to funding, mentorship, and business networks creates barriers that slow growth and hinder success. A 2023 report by the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce found that only 19% of Black entrepreneurs who apply for business loans receive full funding, compared to 39% of White entrepreneurs. At Startupcourt, we believe in breaking these barriers and fostering a thriving, inclusive ecosystem where Black entrepreneurs can build, scale, and succeed. This is why we’re excited to launch the Founders’ Lounge, a monthly gathering dedicated to empowering Black founders, business owners, and service providers in Calgary.
Why We’re Doing This
The reality is that Black entrepreneurs face unique challenges—whether it’s access to capital, mentorship, or industry connections. Studies show that Black business owners are more likely to be denied loans, receive lower investment offers, and have limited access to key industry networks. Despite these barriers, Black entrepreneurs continue to drive innovation, create jobs, and contribute to economic growth.
However, without proper support, many promising businesses struggle to reach their full potential. The Founders’ Lounge is designed to be a solution-driven space where Black founders can gain access to resources, opportunities, and meaningful relationships that propel their businesses forward. By bringing together founders, investors, business leaders, and key ecosystem players, we aim to foster a strong, collaborative community that thrives together. Our goal is to ensure that Black entrepreneurs in Calgary have access to the same tools, funding, and guidance that others benefit from, thereby closing the opportunity gap and leveling the playing field.
What to Expect at Founders’ Lounge

What This Means for the Calgary Tech Ecosystem
Calgary’s tech and business ecosystem is rapidly evolving, but to truly thrive, it must be inclusive and representativeof all entrepreneurial talent. Despite growing conversations about diversity in tech and business, many Black entrepreneurs remain underrepresented in high-growth industries. A 2022 report by the Brookfield Institute found that Black-led startups receive less than 1% of venture capital funding in Canada, despite their significant contributions to the economy.
By establishing the Founders’ Lounge, we are creating a long-term platform for Black entrepreneurs to access the same opportunities, resources, and networks that fuel successful ventures. This initiative aims to:
- Increase access to venture capital and alternative funding options for Black-owned businesses
- Foster mentorship and collaboration between seasoned entrepreneurs and emerging founders
- Break down systemic barriers that have historically limited Black entrepreneurs’ access to key business resources
- Enhance visibility and representation of Black founders in Calgary’s startup ecosystem
A more inclusive ecosystem benefits everyone—more diverse businesses mean stronger innovation, new market opportunities, and economic growth for Calgary as a whole. Cities like Toronto and Atlanta have demonstrated how investing in Black entrepreneurship leads to higher job creation, increased economic output, and a more vibrant business landscape. Supporting Black entrepreneurs is not just about creating equality; it’s about driving Calgary’s business community toward a more innovative and prosperous future.
How You Can Get Involved
The Founders’ Lounge is built for founders, by founders—and we need your support! Here’s how you can get involved:
- Attend & Engage – Be part of the conversation, connect with other entrepreneurs, and gain valuable insights.
- Share Your Expertise – If you have knowledge or experience that can help others, consider mentoring, speaking at future events, or leading a workshop.
